It’s that time of year again when the Superbowl gathers the attention of millions of viewers across the globe. Superbowl LIV took place in Miami in the ‘Hard rock Stadium’, it’s been 50 years since the Kansas City Chiefs had last won the Superbowl, The Chiefs would come out on top this year with victory of 31-20.
The article surrounding the Superbowl in ‘The Irish independent’ was written by George sanders. Unsurprisingly the article was buried deep in the sports section for the day as it doesn’t necessarily have the same popularity levels in Ireland. Nonetheless, the article was presented to the reader with a picture of a joyous Mahomes with his hands on the Lombardi trophy. Followed by the headline “Mahomes Takes it to the limit to make Superbowl history”. In my personal opinion I felt that there was very little emphasis placed on the headline as it wasn’t snappy and just didn’t seem to roll off the tongue too nicely.
Overall, the article did cover the main events of the game and summarised it to a decent level however, some of the terms used by Sanders may have flown over the heads of the blow-in Nfl fan. The article was split into two parts the summary of the game and the aftermath. There were two key elements missing from this article from my viewpoint. Firstly, Sanders forgot to mention the Superbowl halftime show in the article, for some its the most exciting part of the night and this years Superbowl halftime certainly didn’t disappoint with J.Lo and Shakira putting on a show-stopping performance that had everyone talking. Therefore, to not mention it in the article seemed a little bizarre. Secondly, there was no mention of Chiefs coach Andy reid within the article, Reid had the support of many neutral fans as he had previously been to the Superbowl with the Philadelphia Eagles but lost to the New England Patriots. Therefore, this victory had the media clambering for Andy Reid’s reaction so not adding a single quote or mention was a large mistake in my eyes.
In a quick summary the article within ‘The Irish Independent’ was informative but George sanders knowledge of the NFL was exposed as it was just like very other generic article written about the Superbowl and lacked vibrant quotes from Travis Kelce etc. who stated “We unleashed a can of Whoop-ass on everybody”. The exclusion of the Chiefs halftime show also lowered the quality of the article.
