‘CBS News’ Reports on Silent protest in Selma Alabama

By Scott McCabe

It had been 55 years since the iconic Edmund Bridge crossing occurred in Alabama and democrat Michael Bloomberg was giving a speech in a Brown Chapel AME church commemorating the evet.

The speech did not go as planed as the headline CBS chose would explain; ‘Churchgoers in Selma turn their backs on Bloomberg during service’. Starting with the headline, its slightly too long in my opinion, but overall it does give a clear representation of describing the incident.

The article written by Melissa Quinn and Timothy Perry begins with some context of why Bloomberg was at a church giving a speech and gives a detailed passage of what happened ‘roughly 10 minutes into his remarks, several in attendance rose from their seats and silently turned away from him.’

There is then some quotations that follow this passage with a word or two from Reverend Leodis Strong who conveys his gratitude for Bloomberg showing up to the church to speak. The image that follows next is a wonderful addition to the article it provides context on just how awkward it must have been sitting in that church when all those churchgoers turned their back to Bloomberg.

As much as the article is well put together with a variety of quotations from relevant sources and images. The key to the article is why were there silent protests in this church against Michael Bloomberg , and to be honest from what I can see CBS didn’t put enough emphasis on this. You must to delve into the article to try and find reasoning. I gathered that they were protesting due to Bloomberg initially declining the Reverends invite, but I’m still unsure.

Overall, the article was strong but was lacking in clarity.
